Boegoeberg Dam Water overflows Water expanse

Boegoeberg Dam

Situated 35 km from Groblershoop on a gravel road, the Boegoeberg Dam was formed when a 10m high weir was constructed in 1929. The construction formed part of an extensive economic development plan to uplift the poor white Afrikaners at the time. The name of the dam derives from the Boegoe plant that grows wild in the surrounding hills. The plant was widely used in traditional medicine. The holiday resort at the dam is like a green oasis in the desert and provides for camping, angling, and provides accommodation in six chalets. The water mass provides excellent opportunities for skiing, canoeing and sailing. The Boegoeberg Dam was completed in 1933 and is the third largest dam in the Orange River.Read more...

Ezelsklaauw and other places of interest

EzelsklaauwIn the Esel Mountains, about 30km south west of Groblershoop, a natural ravine was formed. The water hole in the ravine fills up during the rainy season. This cycle must have been completed year in and year out for centuries, as is witnessed by the mysterious footprint in the rock below the water hole. Local legend has it that some kind of primitive donkey left its footprint in the mud. The mud then became fossilized which rendered the donkey's slippery path visible until today. At the bottom of the ravine some remains of lava is also evident. One theory explaining the footprints is that the tremendous heat generated by a volcanic outburst fossilized the mud — footprints and all! The footprints are situated on private land. Other places of interest in clude the first water turbine on this section of the Orange River and the Commonwealth War Graves dateing back to the Anglo Boer War. For Plant and Bird enthusiasts there are many spots to stop and look at the wonders of nature. Fishing, both at the dam and along the river, is a peacefull pastime and the many hiking trails take you to, amoungst others, cabves with San Paintings. Read more......

Following the N10 towards Upington, you will be rewarded with several vistas of the vines and other irrigation crops along the river. There are a number of small townships along the route but the biggest is Grootdrink named for the larg pool of water always available in the earlier years for the watering of cattle. Safety

In all parts of Africa when travelling individually be aware that you appear to the locals to be rich and they may wish you to share some of those riches with them. Do Not leave valuables in hotel bedrooms or lying visible in motor cars. Always keep a copy of your passport and flight tickets in another bag. Use safe deposit boxes at the hotels and lodges and don't forget to clear them on departure. In cities be aware of your surroundings and don't walk alone after dark. Use only marked taxis.

Full medical fascilities are available in Upington at the edge of our region including State and Private Hospitals, many doctors and Chemists. Although we have mosquitos along the river they are just a nuisance as the area has no Malaria.

Upington also has agents for most makes of motor vehicle and all car hire firms. The airport at Upington has daily flights to both Cape Town and Johannesburg. Inter-city busses have daily services to most centers.
